Second Beatitude - Blessed are Those Who Mourn

Matthew 5:4
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

"Mourning," in this context, speaks of sorrowing greatly over personal sin.  It is a feeling of such strong regret and hatred over your sin that you run to God seeking forgiveness and never desire to go back to your previous lifestyle.

"Be comforted" refers to the joy felt during the time of forgiveness and a sense of peace knowing that God's salvation is eternal and not based on whether we deserve it or not.  There is security in the knowledge that God sends the Holy Spirit to help and guide us in our spiritual growth.
While we are still sinners during our time on this earth and at times will sin against God in our thoughts, words, and actions, God has promised to be faithful and forgive us if we confess our sins before Him.  There is never a need to worry that God will abandon us or grow weary in forgiving us, for when He looks at us, He sees the precious blood of His Son covering all of our sins from past to future.  Although we are commanded to grow more like Christ everyday and are to strive to follow God's commandments shown in His Word, we have already been forgiven of our sins once and for all and have the righteousness of Jesus Christ credited to our account.  Based on His blood, His life, and His righteousness, we have assurance that God accepts us when we come to Him in Christ's name.  We are comforted in the knowledge that we do not have to earn our own salvation because it has already been earned for us!

Let us therefore weep over our defiant disobedience before God so that we may have eternal joy and comfort through His salvation!

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your great gift of salvation.  Thank You for being faithful to forgive every trespass from past, present, and future.  I look to Your will and trust that You will provide perfectly in Your time.
In Your precious Son's name,
Amen.

1 John 1:9
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
